losing tools ps 7

PS 7 running as an upgrade from PS 6 on an Intel machine.

Recently PS has been giving me a fit.

If I call up an image, then push Image, then push Adjustments the drop down menu appears, but that is when the trouble begins.

For instance, when I select Brightness and Contrast those functions work, but when I select Level no tools will work. The "Levels" do not work and the rest of the drop down menu goes grey and nothing works.

Selecting File, Edit and others produce their greyed out drop downs. I can't even exit PS. The only way out is to go to Task Manager, find the PS function and stop it.

I have uninstalled PS from the Control Panel, reinstalled PS with the CD, re-booted my machine and the same condition occurs.

Any suggestion, in simple non-geek language would be much appreciated.

I have no idea what is happening, but try layer adjustments instead. Go to layers>new adjustment layer and choose the one you want. Make your adj., then go back and see if you can choose another layer adjustment.

As to the crashing part, I'm not techie enough to advise. Did you have PS6 on the same computer?

Intel Machine - XP SP3

BTW, tried IBCLARE's suggestion but that was a no-go.

If it makes any difference, when the machine locks with PS running as in the above the courser changes to an eye dropper and I'm stuck with that until I exit through task manager and restart PS.

Thanks for the replay !

Sorry, I should have been more clear.

The drop down appears and all of those tools are "present" in that the letters for the names are clear and distinct.

If I click on Brightness and Contrast that tool will work, but if I click on Levels that tool does not work and the rest of the tool list is "greyed out". It is at that point that just about everything in all of the other drop downs become greyed out and the PS application stops working except for being able to cause the drop downs to drop down. The only way that I can escape is to call up Task Manager with the three key command, find PS and call a halt to its operation.

Sounds like an image mode is blocking some tools?

PS ignorant here...What is a "scratch disc"?

With file/image on the screen...

Image + Adjustments + Brightness and Contrast = Operational

But

Image + Adjustments + Levels = Greyed out drop downs and PS locked up

Check your image mode what is it (top menu bar, in dropdown under image)
