Looking for background ideas

Hey guys,

I'm building a website that will chronicle my travels and feature cheap but good places to eat and stay etc etc.

It's called 'Traveling Paupers' and I'm sitting here staring at the blank background trying to think of what style background would be good.

I hate backgrounds that are just like some picture that was taken of that area, to me it always seems very unprofessional looking.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I'm trying to think of some ideas that are not too trite. Everything under the sun and all . . .

It might help to know what kinds of transpo you use, what types of eateries you frequent, where do you stay - hostels, hotels, etc?

What kind of style do you prefer? Cartoon OK? B&W outlines of objects or landscape? Really formal looking? Do you have a color scheme in mind?

It might also help if you could post the rest of the banner so we can see what kind of space you have to deal with. Do you also want an image background for the page? If so, I would figure out the banner first.

Just lost a whole post. :(

I'm not going to be able to get the banner done first. I spent way too much on vacation and I'm terrible at that kind of art, so that will probably be down the line.

As for what the banner will be like. I'm thinking of somekind of cartoonish representation of paupers traveling. Perhaps with a wagon being pulled along. Was also debating a transparent background so I could overlay it on a photo from the area that I'm talking about on a particular page.

At the moment I have the size set to 960 by 150.

960 is the width of my content container. So I have the header inside the container at the top.

I'm not against images in general.

I just don't want to use some snapshot taken in a specific place.

For example, here is a real estate website from my area that shows exactly what I hate.

Here is an example of what I've worked up so far tinkering around:
