Lines instead of letters

I tried to write text on a picture but instead of letter there is horizontal lines.
I used the horizontal type tool. Is it the right tool for letters?

try first to change the font you are using, this tool is designed for fonts, so it shouldn't be a problem

Most likely you have the resulotion of the image really high, which makes the font so tiny, that all you see is the horizontal guide line of the type tool.
