Hi,

I'm having a problem creating layers. I was under the impression as soon as you start creating something in Photoshop you should be able to create a layer. For example say you are creating a gif on Photoshop if you so wish you should be able to go to the layers section press the turned page icon and you have a new layer.

Every time I try to open something I have already made on Photoshop it becomes impossible for me to create a layer. I have a dark blue background which I have created as a gif and I have a test tube which I have already created as a gif. The idea is that I'm going to put the blue background as the first layer and put the test tube on top. However whenever I open either of these images it becomes impossible to create layers because the layer section are grayed out. There is also a lock icon in the layers section and I don't seem to be able to unlock it. I do not have this problem whenever I try to create a new creation on photoshop. It only becomes a problem after I have saved-it-for the web and I open it up again in photoshop

Can anyone help? Hope this post isn't confusing.

When Save For The Web dialog is opened press "Print Screen" button.
Then cancel that saving. Make new image. Press CTRL+V. Then flattern image or Save For The Web as jpg. And post it here.

Ok I think I did it right. Hope this helps.

So nothing wrong with your settings.
It's a strange build in stuff in PS. Didn't know about that.
Thing is that if you save only one frame file will have index color mode. And with this color mode - no layers.
Solution. Add some frame diferent from first frame and then saved and opened gif will be in RGB mode (allows layers) or convert opened gif to RGB (Image/Mode/RGB).

That's your answer. TY SeniorS. GIF is an indexed color file. If it is a single gif/one layer I mean, just go to Image>mode>RGB

I just figured why that's confusion happened.

First. Yes, gif is indexed color file but by using Save For The Web i forgotten about it (not me alone i guess). Now we don't worry about RGB/Index PS do it all for us.

Second. Since CS5 PS lets us open gif as it is, with all animation it has (it shows as frames as separate layers). And that's good, we can mess with other's animation now without additional software.
But Index color mode don't let us use layers (it could let us use layers but then it should diable all blending modes besides Normal and swtich most of layers posibilities off and then there's no use of layers anymore) so PS automaticly converts image to RGB. If there is no animation (only one frame) then there's no need to convert image and it's left in Index mode.

Now it's clear and i feel realief.
