layers confusion(for the lack of a better title)

Working with 4 layers I select one using mouse clicking the layer at the layer palette
I go to the image with layer #3(or any selected)
trying to use the MoveTool once I click on image the layer selection jumps to the upper layer
In this example it would be layer 4 while I have layer 3 selected, this has happened many time this week have any of you experienced this, or know what it is causing it? hope that's understandable, I know it's confusing ,

Have you tried resetting user preferences, this sounds like a candidate for it.

I did that the other day and it seemed fine but it's doing it again.very frustrating!

Turn off Auto-Select in the options on top.

Good trip except for catching a cold about midway through, thanks for asking. Egypt is a great place to visit.
