Layer-switching mid-stroke

I'm an artist who needs a very specific feature which I haven't found yet.

I need to be able to switch layers in mid-stroke. Imagine that you want to draw a line which goes over and under many other lines. I'd like to draw the line in one stroke, and then push a key which tells the brush to go under or over the other lines.

Does anyone know a way of doing this? The application I need it for is a very complex array of lines and curves which go over and under each other.

Thanks,
Marco

You can't do it like that...

But what you can do is make the stroke... then duplicate the layer. So now you have this:

Stroke
Object
Stroke Duplicate

Then go onto the stroke layer and just take the eraser to it wherever you want it to go underneath... because the other layer is below that... you don't have to be very careful with the erasing because the duplicate will simply show through. I've made all sorts of funky interlocking designs that way.

Very clever! I love this solution. I will try to look at your designs, I hope you have them up.

Thanks,
Marco
