I've been asked to change the color of a dog's fur - from white to dark brown

I've tried some of the more common methods of color switching (for ex. replace color), but nothing looks convincing. It always looks like I've simply tainted the color - not changed it entirely. I've tried adding blend modes, but I haven't been successful there, either.

Any suggestions?

do a hue saturation adjustment layer then mask out where you dont want it, if you look on youtube there are also plenty of technique tutorials on changing human hair color which is essentially the same thing (hopefully less matty and smelly though lol)
