One of my latest projects;

Island over Paris.png

Made an floating island over Paris and then decided to make it a adventure/holiday island.

Comments more then welcome..

I would have liked to see it without Paris below. Maybe take a Paris landmark like the Eiffel and place it up there. The reason is that your island is such a hyper color and Paris is not. It could be argues that that's the point, but they seem too separate. When I first opened the page, I thought it was two images. Maybe they could be tied together better if the exposure and contrast on the city was darker/deeper and like inkpad said, the island cast a shadow.

Also, I think almost all the elements on the island need some sharpening. The blimp needs some cleanup of the white background and probably a noticable shadow on the ground of the island.

But I like the idea, the combinations and composition, and the fantasy colors.

Still-learning. We like to see the components that are used in making manipulations. Your entire background is someone else's work. When we make these manipulations for fun, we aren't terribly strict about using other's images, but we modify them aa lot to justify them being part of our artwork. We also credit the artist. I'd appreciate it if you would do that and maybe consider changing some more aspects of it. For instance, create your own cityscape or use your own sky and enhance the colors and so on.

It's always important to credit the source of something. I like the waterfall on the island. It is a good start stillLearning, keep working with it to see how far you can take it. Like Clare said, make it your own. Speaking of working on something, I have got to do something about my stupid avatar. Not really sure what I was thinking at the time, but it must have been a good idea to me :lol::rolleyes:

@inkpad.t:
I decided not to use a shadow because of the sundown, therefore there is no shade (in my opinion)

@ibclare:
Totally agree about the hyper colors, good learning point.
And I used some blur to 'finish' some objects, wouldn't do that these days anymore.
And also a good learning tip about the credits to the original artist or editing..

@ChrisHPZ:
I also thought the waterfall (and the lake) was a succes..

To all:
Great comments, fair and square.
No breakdowns but constructive tips.
Other photoshop-related fora I joined could give some bad critic like "I HATE IT" or
"you suck at this". There is no learning aspect in those comments.

Thanks all

ps: Time to construct my own avatar..

Hi there Still-Learning. Look how bright the city below is.. if This is sundown the buildings would not have so much sunlight on them. if the sky is letting sunlight through in the transition between night and day then so would the city show shadows reflecting this.

Hi SL, I have been discussing copyrights and such with another member who knows about some of the legal aspects. Sometimes attribution is not enough. I know we don't push this too far here. But we generally expect certain protocol. We don't often police things like this but will if the use of another's work is flagrant.

I think if you download an image from a place that gives permission like deviant art, you're OK. Just make it clear that a specific part is not yours and name the artist and site or provide a link. That's why we encourage you (everyone who does manipulations) to post the original images used. At least the major ones.

It is 'good form' to give credit to an artist even if you purchase a stock photo which is meant for use in your own work.

It's also encouraged that you make considerable alteration to the image so as to demonstrate your own interpretation/POV in regard to the scenario you are creating. Try to pick your images with that inmind in fact. How can I manipulate this photo so that I can call it a Photoshop manipulation. Food for thought.

We don't have a specific protocol as we have enough rules, but it is possible you will see at the very least an advisory in regards to this issue.

@ibclare:
Copyright/original artist/credits understood..
