I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to take a sketch and delete all the white space behind it?

I dont know if there is another name for this, but Ive been looking for a few hours now and cant figure out how to do it.

I want to be able to take a sketch and put a layer underneath, filled with a darker color, but still be able to see the lines from the sketch.:banghead: Since the whole picture is white, it blocks out the other color layer beneath you know?

The best way to do it is to mask out the white areas in your sketch layer so that they become transparent.

If you post an example sketch it will be easier to tell you exactly how to go about masking the white, there's many ways to do it.

This is from the Russell Brown show it shows the masking of a polar bear while this goes into detailes of how to mask out a bears hair to its back ground he shows some nice tips on masking with may help you get started :)

with out knowing what your image was i couldn't help find a more suited tutorial this however is a nice well rounded simple one

Thanks Ultiman! That link actually works over here! most video sites never work!

Hey I got 2 more questions! Is there a better paint tool to use to do like a lineart of a whole city? What I mean is are there other tools besides photoshop that people use to do things like that? hmm i dont think im making much sense.

The second question is, if Im already really good at drawing by hand, what are most of the tools i need to be looking at practicing if say I wanted to do things like Chris Scalf. He does dragons and sci fi and seems like he doesnt use that many tools all together, but does use the few tools a lot it seems.

I just watched the video on radius and I have worked with some hairy creatures never could figure out how to get a good edge... I will surely try this one for my own. Thanks for the tip.

hey. I know exactly what you're looking for, and that's Corel Painter. I have both photoshop and corel painter, and personally I prefer photoshop. but basically, the tools most people use is the standard brush tool, sometimes using different shaped brushes. what you want is more akin to painting. i suggest using a tablet, and if you don't have one, buying one is a good idea. They can cost anywhere from $60 to $2000, depending on what you get. I also saw that your question about separating the line art from the background was anwered, but my main question is this: Is it done in ink, or pencil? And if so(with a pencil), is the paper dirty from graphite-dust? if you did it in pen, and the drawing is clean, i know of an excellent way to separate said lines from said backgrounds. (i haven't tried it with a pencil-lined drawing, so it might work for that, but as I said, I don't know) reply to this to let me know :)
