inverting a channel over a gradient

Helllo, i have a kinda strange problem,
i have made a normal map for a model to be used in an animation but it has baked incorrectly for some reason. I have figured out that the red channel has been partially inverted, now what i mean by that is that from left to right as if over a gradient the channel has been inverted. Now i have never used channel manipulation much so im not sure how to fix this. I hecked the manual but there doesnt seem to be anything much on channels, so if anyone could help me out thatd be great :)
can i extract the channel to another layer or image then i could get it done from there ust using layers and masks i think..
well thanks :)

Hello, and welcome to PsG.
Without seeing the channel, it is quite difficult to answer. It sounds like a posterization
The old school method would be to target a channel in the relevant panel, then use a linear gradient in difference mode.

I would try to use a non destrucive method: using a gradient, and in the blending options, check only the red channel, and play with the blending modes.
But it's been a while that I haven't played with Chops (channel operations)

thanks for the info.. the second method is actually exactly what i already tried, but its more complicated than i thought.. the red doesnt change simply on a gradient over the entire image but across each uv island.. so i would need to somehow make a distorted gradient across different shapes and then have different layer blending in local space for 3d surface continuity to remain as its more than simply 'partially inverted' so i think its pretty messed up.. :D
thanks anyway

a completely different question. how to convert an image to pantone colours ? i know how to for individual colours, but thts not much simpler than using indexed colour. surely theres a adjustment to simply convert the image? its probably obvious but i havent seen it yet.. im using cs5 btw..
thanks.

Iisthphir, did you try duplicating a channel to use it as a base, then?
From what you explain it sounds like the polarize filter has been used on the channel...

Again, please post a screenshot, if there is no confidentiality issue.

Please re-post your other question in a different thread, so that it can be useful for others. Part of the solution is to change the mode, I think. Duotone, maybe? What did a google search suggest you?

well i think the normal map is beyond fixing..it was an issue during baking it so fixing it in 2d methods is very difficult.
ill post my other question in a new thread.
thanks.
