Indexed Color Conundrum

Hi All,

I have an question regarding the indexing of colors I have not found an answer to online. I have a set of 400 indexed colors that are real life, profiled paint colors I use. I would like to simplify images to (e.g. the mona lisa). To say 20 colors, or any custom number i choose.

The limit with indexed photoshop colors seems to be 256, this means when i import my custom 400 color pallet, only the first 256 appear in the custom color table and the images miss many of the necessary colors to make the image seem balanced.

Is there an additional tool / program to get around this? Is there a script that could be written? If help is beyond a quick answer, but can be achieved, I am happy to pay for time.

Note: I cannot reduce my pallet to 256, as it will not produce enough variation and detail, dithering of any kind is also not an option.

Thanks in advance

PS index mode is only 256 colors.

I'm not sure what you mean by "I have a set of 400 indexed colors..." and "i import my custom 400 color pallet":)

What format are you trying to use to hold your 400 colors and how did you "import" it in PS?

I suggest you make an image with all of your colors, say 20x20 with 1x1 squares filled with your colors.

Then turn it to the Index mode to get the 256 colors palette using one of the options(Perceptual, Selective or Adaptive), save the palette and use it.

P.S. I really don't understand it when you say you want to "simplify images" from 400 to "say 20 colors" and, at the same time: - "I cannot reduce my pallet"....:)

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I was importing an .ACO (photoshop pallet file), this contains 400 color swatches, I manually chose.

I use "Load Swatches" under the swatches tab in photoshop or Image > Mode > indexed color > *Custom Pallet, Load Pallet (select my aco file). then click ok.

In answer to your question "P.S. I really don't understand it when you say you want to "simplify images" from 400 to "say 20 colors" and, at the same time: - "I cannot reduce my pallet"..." --- What i mean is, within the 400 colors, I want to use only 20 of the best colors to restrict the image to from my pallet choice of 400.

Thanks,

A
