In photoshop7, not being able to use the pencil tool to draw line

I am still using photoshop 7.0. So I dont know what I did, all of a sudden I see a weired small icon kind of thing on my top left of my new image. So when I create a new with a white background or transparent, on the top left corner I see a gray 01 and a cross or envelope sign. So now I am trying to use the pencil tool to draw lines like a border to a image. But nothing is coming up. How can I get rid of this icons on the top left so the image would look normal?

Sounds like the slice tool.. Check your slice tool settings..

Goto..... View> Show> Show Slices, you may also want to check to see if the Slice Lock option is checked..
