Importing spot colour illustrator file into Photoshop

Hi there,

I'm having a dilemma with a spot colour logo I created in Illustrator. The client wants versions in photoshop formats, however the logo is made up of 3 spot colours (802C, Process Blue and Pantone Black) the green being a fluorescent. When I import the illustrator file into Photoshop it loses its illuminosity or vividness. Is it possible to create a spot colour photoshop file from the illustrator file and if so how do I do this? Is there a different setting I should use? Should I select 'Lab' colour? Sorry, bit clueless on this subject

Many thanks in advance x

cant you just open it up in illustrator then go to file> Export>

make sure you have a suitable colour pallet being used in photoshop.

Thanks Hoogle, I have just tried this but colours still look very dull in photoshop. The bar at the top says (Layer 0, RGB/8) but even when I change it to 'Lab' the colours look dull? Not sure what else I should be doing...

you could try changing the settings in colour profile to do not manage colours in photoshop.

Alternatively maybe in swatch settings in illustrator choose spot colours and change it from lab to cmyk.

There are a lot of things that could cause this, but my first guess is that the problem probably arises because of a mismatch in color profiles between AI and PS. Yes, of course, at least for starting out, both should say RGB/8 at the top of the window. However, that doesn't tell you if one might be using a ProFoto color profile whereas the other might be using a sRGB color profile and you don't have the preferences set up to warn you of a color profile mismatch (or you are ignoring the warning).

Here's a demonstration of the amount of change in color saturation and contrast one might see if you incorrectly go between these two color profiles. First is how an image (one of my photos, in this case) created in one color space should look if correctly converted to sRGB for web display. The second is how the image will look if it is not correctly converted.

If this is the sort of dulling effect you are seeing, open up the "color settings" dialog box in either AI or PS and see if you see the warning circled below. If so, follow the instructions to synchronize your settings using Bridge.

Exactly Tom. That was my thought also.

Thanks so much for taking the time to explain all of this to me. However I have checked colour settings in both Photoshop and Illustrator and they say that they are synchronized(?)

Here is the logo image so you can see the difference in illustrator and Photoshop:

The green should be a fluorescent.
Thanks again guys

I opened both of your screenshots in PS. They look just like they do here. Have you tried saving your file as a PDF and then opening in Photoshop? What happens when you copy it in AI and then just paste it into PS?

If you want to send me the AI file, I will try it on my system and see what I get. PM me if you do and I'll give u an email address

Also, by the way, you can correct that color shift in about 2 seconds. If you only have this file to deal with, you may want to do that until you can get the cause of this pinned down. Simply sample the color from the screenshot of the correct one, it will now be your foreground color in PS. Then, use the Magic Wand without discontinuous being checked, click in the green. All will be selected, then hit Alt/Backspace in Windows or the equivalent on a Mac.

I wish I could shed some more light on the cause, as I export from Ai to Ps everyday, but have never encountered the issue. Will be interesting to see what the cause is when you do work it out, for future reference.

Very cool Racoon..glad I could help!
Yaaaaay!!! You're a star thank you. That did it, opening PDF in Photoshop. All my files are now nice and bright thanks again x
