Why did the lizard not have a sharp focus to it, yet the surroundings did?
Please.

Very low depth of field guessing was taken at about 3 -5 aperature causing nice soft backgrounds in normal situations which means you have to use correct focus points.

you should get a display similar to this when viewing through your view finder.

Ok not sure if this is working as image does not seem to be showing in preview. but there will be a series of focus points. you should be able to use a dial to switch the focus point that is the main attention so in the lizard case you would have not wanted to use the center 1 unless you had the tip of the nose in the center frame.

This is a macro attempt with my phone the other day. I think I was more scared than the lizard.

No need to be scared of bearded dragons. They are usually very docile. (which you probably already know) I wanted to get a couple but my Mrs. said no. Had iguanas which are much more aggressive, and that's it for her. Sticking to dogs these days.
