I have been trying to open a JPEG file in illustrator, the size is 2304 x 1728 the image when opened in illustrator shows the art board within the center of the image it doesn't go right to the edges I'm only trying to do a live trace, and when I do it only traces within the artboad. how do I create a preference where the art board is the size of the image opened in the first place? I hope this next sense, I'll post a preview screenshot in a minute

Obviously you can drag the image to fit the art board, but I don't know of any setting which will make it match the size automatically.

You've got (at least) three choices:

a) the pull-down "object"menu (attachment 1) has the option to make the artboard fit the bounds of the art.

b) click on the tool that looks kinda like PS's crop tool (attachment 2) and you can pull the handles outward.

c) enter the size you want manually. With the artboard bounds visible (ie, by clicking on the previous tool), hit "enter" and a dialog box will pop up (attachment 3)

...and I want to thank you for pointing out (in another thread) about the ability of AI to do simple arithmetic in some dialog boxes. I can't believe I never ran into that before now. That's great to know.

Awesome thanks guys... I hear that Hawkeye........ it's near impossible to remember all of the tools or options Adobe puts out .......
it's just crazy! thanks again guys!

Okay each time I open it it's a problem so let's try this again
Yes I know how to get the artboard to fit image, but how do I have it automatically open to the size of the image, I shouldn't have to change the art board size depending on the image it should open up automatically to the size of the image or am I missing something

Hi iDad -

Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to get AI to do what you want.

I would agree with you that for folks whose primary interest is photographic, AI should size the newly created artboard to the photo, but I guess that in their infinite wisdom, Adobe sided with users who are designers and who are often under very strict size constraints that can't be violated and may prefer all artboards to be of one exact size. That's my guess, anyway ....

I hear you, but I would think if they have the option to open an image within the program, you would think the art board would be the same size as the image being opened. I guess it's no biggie. Sometimes logical is a bit of a stretch lol

Come on guys, the gears and cogs at Adobe can't think of everything...can they?
