I'm trying to make a black rectangle with a hole in it. I've got the transparent background and the rectangle, but for the life of me can't figure out how to punch a hole in it. It feels like it should be really simple and I bet it is. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sequel

When you draw your circle over the square you need to activate the subtract selection option:

Its the 15th icon along in this picture, if you hover over them you will see a description (In PS). Should have what you are looking for in no time :) The above is for Photoshop CS5 if you have another version that option will still be available but might be in a slightly different position.

Here's another way....

1. Make your rectangular selection using the rectangular marquee tool.
Note: Make sure your layer is not locked...For example the background layer is locked by default. (Make a new layer)

2. Choose the colour you want for the rectangle (Foreground colour). Hit Alt + Backspace to fill with colour.

3. Choose the elliptical marquee tool and select the hole you need. Hit the Delete key on your keyboard.
Note: Holding down the Shift key while dragging your selection will ensure that the select is perfectly round.

With any selection made...use the Arrow keys on your keyboard to move/reposition the selection.

Webwize way is much better, since you get a vector mask, and that means you can resize your rectangle as much as you want, without losing quality.
