Illustrator Illustrator excluding paths help

Hi all,

I am new here and this is my first post.

I am currently trying to find a way to subtract my paths from a shape
to create a shape that fits inside my drawing so that I can colour it.

At the moment, I am using a pen to dot all around to create a whole shape
before colouring it in and wandered if there was a faster way.

You need to communicate better to get help.

In what way doesn't it work? Are you selecting all the objects first? Is the option greyed out? Explain...
