i'd like to make a graph background

Bob, you can save time by defining a pattern tile, and store it for later use in other documents.

Decide/ measure the size of of a single tile, say 20px square.
File > New > 20 x 20 RGB.
Fill with the colour for the background.
Select >All and nudge the selection along and down by 3px.
Select > Inverse and fill with another colour for the mesh.

You will now have a coloured square with another colour along the top and right-hand side.

Edit > Define Pattern > save, give it a name.

Now when you need a mesh, all you do is Edit > Fill > Use Pattern (Select this new pattern)

Abracadablidocious! The layer will transform before your eyes into a trawl-net.

It sounds complicated but it really is a scoosh, and it can be used again and again.

That help?
Cheers, Al.
