I'm curious, I was doodeling with some markers a time ago and I created an icecube. As most of you will know, from a distance this will look good, but take a closer look and you'll see that it's not that good at all. Now I'm curious if any of you can show me how to create an icecube in photoshop? I mean with melting water, displaced transparacy and stuff.

Heres why. - Your ice has a refaction similarish to glass,which means lots of reflections/depth and very accurate specular lighting to look right.Then there is melting ice which is going to involve more of the same but even more involved as the ice is going to be thinner in some areas and darker in others with more uneven specular lighting still and all of the surroundings of your image,say a room have to be reflected in the ice or show through in just the right area.The problem is that in your brain is a memory or file which is logged which knows excatly what an ice cube should look like,and when we paint an image etc this file gets dragged out and is used to compare what we paint with what we know about an ice cube
I would suggest hand painting it where you can have a bit of artistic licence,or if you have a 3d app to use it
,however if you like a challenge I say go for it

I just ran across this tutorial and remembered seeing this thread a long time ago. It's a pretty decent try at a near impossible (as kiwi has explained) subject.
