I am wanting to start using buildings in my art, what is the best way to do this? ... do i use the pen tool and cut the buildings out of an image or could i create the buildings from scratch? ... what tools could i use?

I think that all depends on what look your going for. I use either use the polygonal lasso tool or the pen tool to cut out buildings. But like I said it depends on the look your going after.

Many ways to cut it out.....I would always think of a mask, as I can keep adjusting

You can draw it from scratch if you're good enough, you can use clip art, you can search images for the one you like and you can use preset brushes of buildings .... Your choice is many but it still boils down to your taste, needs, ability,

what about drawing them from scratch? id like to get into that because a lot of images are copyrighted. i dont want to break any laws

Hi Stallings,

Do you know much about vanishing points and perspective?

If you are a good artist then draw it on paper, scan it and use that, or use a tablet to draw your masterpiece right into the document you have created. With a name like stallings art it sounds like you might know what you are doing .. you're asking which tools to use? I think you may need to study what the tools are, what they do and then you can go from there.

well i mean i know what the tools do and everything lol i didnt mean that ... sorry im not good at explaining things, i was mainly just wondering what is the techniques you all use to construct a building lol

OH, I think everyone of us uses different techniques depending on the picture. If you're an artist I would assume that you'd like to draw one, if not, grab it from somewhere or use a brush.

I have been known to create a new layer of white above the image I wanted to recreate and then drop the opacity of the new layer so I can see the original below it. Then I use the pen tool to copy the lines. Then use the "stroke path" option to create the lines. I am sure there are much better ways but it works for me

to do the image below i used the pen tool and cut out a building on an image i found on google & created the landscape ... thats legal right? lol im just curious

I do the same except I do not use a white layer. I use a clear layer and then use the brush or pencil tool with a colour that is not in the image I am tracing. Once its done I close the base layer and then select all of the clear background and fill it with white and finally invert the selection and fill the traced lines with (in my case always) black.

Its not always easy to see the finer detail if you use a white tracing layer. Kind of like using onion skin paper as opposed to clear acetate back in the good old days before PCs. The acetate is easier to use.

bgoodman4 I knew someone would know a better way
Stallings I use a tablet myself. Once I got used to it I love it:cheesygrin::cheesygrin:. Gives me so much more control than my mouse did

I absolutely could not live without my tablet! A MUST if your going to draw!

do you guys use a tablet or a mouse to draw?

I use a tablet/laptop convertible. This way I have the best of both worlds. When I want to do PS or CAD design work I can us it in tablet mode and I am working(drawing) on the screen I am looking at. At other times, when I want to do non-design type work I can use it as a laptop. One nice thing, apart from drawing on the devices screen, is that I can use it anywhere. I am not tied to a desk and chair.
