I'm a bit of a nerd and I've been drawing comics and doing animated sprites and stuff for a while, and I use photoshop for everything, start to finish. I don't even sketch on paper.

I use the brush tool for most stuff! for example, this is all brush (although I started with a font for the letters in the logo, originally)

here's some of my comic examples!

for me, I lack any formal training in photoshop, so while I may be underskilled and ignorant in some areas of photoshop, I've figured out strange approaches to other things that get results.

I also use the animation window to make simple frame by frame animation, as I aspire to make a video game (never finished one yet).

for something like this, a run cycle that has several different aspects of movement (legs, head, rotation of head, etc), I actually use many layers to seperate different actions. For instance, typically start by animating the legs and body and then working in the arms and head. there may be software that's better geared towarsd managing this, but I don't like trying to learn new things.

thanks, in addition to being attention starved like many other artists, it may also be a round about way of poking a new area of the internet to see if by chance any other developers (particularly programmers) may want to collaborate on a game (probably a simple flash game to start). :) just shout me out if so.

Welcome to the forum, twotimingpete.

Now that's talent. And you're on the right tract.

Patience. I'm sure you'll find the right people along the way. So until then, hone your skill.

Enjoy your time here.

you flatter me, thanks. I still have a lot to learn and most of what I do just comes from experimentation/determination.

here's some animation that some of you may find interesting. this is basically taking layer-animating to its logical conclusion. Here I made a cute mech and seperated its parts into a number of layers, and was able to animate the mech to do various actions mostly just by moving these and then touching up. Remember that photoshop is the only program I used for any of this. Some of you may not think of photoshop as an animating program but it can be used that way if you're crazy.

and this one took the most work since I had to add in some stuff that none of the others use.

This is great work! I have an animation project I wanted to work on for YouTube. If you're interested, let me know. It would be animating characters and backgrounds that I draw in either Ps, Ai, or both.

PM me if you want more details.

Thanks. I'd say traditional animation is well beyond me. I have to resort to a lot of tricks with layers and a lot of trial and error to even get 2D video game style art to look somewhat okay. a 10 or 12 frame run cycle can take me hours and hours on end to get to look decent.

Very nice work, haha I find it very ironic you saying you want a partner, and your name is "twotimingpete". Just a funny thing I'd point out. Keep up the good work man, very nice animations. Unique.

it's a stupid nickname I came up with when I was a kid and I just kept using it for things. easy to keep track of that way. I held off on using it for my ebay name, though, as to not make anyone uneasy. lol. incidentally that's where I put "quick" in my name instead of twotiming.

Yeah, lol it's a funny name. Glad to see you didn't put it as your ebay name though haha. Welcome to PSGurus pal.

I see. I want to figure out a way to use traditional, hand-made drawings, but speed up the process by animating in a computer. I don't know if there's a program that can do that.

technically you can do that in photoshop. the way animation works in photoshop is pretty straight forward. you have frames, you have a drawing in each frame. layers being on or off and position of things in layers can be tracked from frame to frame too which is a feature I make heavy use of to do my animations, but a REAL old school animator would have no need of.

flash is a program that's much more suited to doing animations, you can use raster images imported from photoshop as well as vectors, I just haven't really cared to learn it (so far). I intend to.
