How to work if different end-file sizes required?

Hi,

If I am working on an image for which I know I will need very different output sizes such as a 400px wide file for web and a 4000px wide file for printing in high quality.

Normally I would of course work with the highest quality version and just generate the smaller version I need for the web etc later on from the finished file.
However I noticed that when using artistic filters such as brush strokes etc these filters will scale differently on different image sizes. This means if I work on the high quality version and finish everything how I like it, the image will look completely different and can be completely destroyed when converting to a smaller version because of this filter scaling.

Would be nice if you could let me know how you are handling these issues and what the best way of working is.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Tom

Are you flattening everything before scaling down? If you do, it should scale down properly and not look different

As Rob said make sure the image is flattened and you won't get any problems. It should do this automatically but if not, Image - Flatten image.

Thanks for the help, no I tried to convert the size without flattening it because I will still need all the layers intact later on.

Ok, then I guess I just have to save it under a different name to make a version I can first flatten and then resize?

Another thing is that the stroke filters etc I am using work very different on a 4000px wide image, it is actually difficult to get the same nice result as on a 1200px image for example.

Is there a way to scale the filter effect before using it or so to make it behave the same way also in larger file size?

It should work like this... Figure out the difference in size (4000/1200=3.33). If the size for the filter used is 25 for example, then to use it with the 4000 image it would be 25x3.33=83.25.

Thanks for this information RT! I had no idea that it works like that, I will try that but what if the difference is too big.I mean what if the filter doesn't go up to 83?

Tom

Hi again,

I tried now basically everything but I am not able to get or reproduce the same effect with the angled strokes filter on a larger size image as on the a small one.

The effect is much less intense and therefore the result looks more like only unsharp or blurry and not like nice sharp strokes that give structure. In my opinion that is because the strokes are too small for the image size.

What can I do about that?

Regards,
Tom
