Hi there,

on a picture. i can turn a blue object into yellow, green or any other color. and vice versa.
To do that i know 5 different ways, or combination of those methods.

1- Hue/Saturation
2- Color Balance
3- Selective Color
4- Replece Color (Similar to Hue/Saturation)

5- select the area, create a new layer, paint the selected area on new layer, blend the new layer with "linear burn".

but when it comes to black, i can't change the black to another color with any of the ways above. So i was wondering if it is possible to turn a black object into white without killing the texture. Or cleaning the object from colors, making it colorless.
best way i know so far is playing with "exposure" settings. but this time the objcet on the image is becoming blure and loosing its texture.

Here is the object i m trying to make white (or colorless). Do you know any way to do it?

it's a little problem, but of course it is possible. everything's possible with photoshop.

have you tried to paint with white on a new layer and play with the blending modes? maybe "color" blending mode.. try thinking this way and not just with the regular hue/saturation, cause the simple tools are good only for the simple jobs.. :) you're job is not that simple..

Here is a suggestion, I have been trying it, just to see if I could do it. What I did was I made a new layer >inverted it to white, placed it underneath the black layer then played with transparency of the black one.It is possible but very time consuming if detail a necessity. tricky as all getgo.

Simple. Use Invert Adjustment Layer. I did not take much care with the blue insert, but it will do the job for you.

ALB, just doing a simple invert image causes the shadows to be wrong. It makes it appear as though the light source is coming from the bottom of the shoe rather than from above.

Oh..OK My old eyes ain't that good.

Looks good.now HOW ?

Bear in mind that I'm just making stuff up as I go along.

These are the steps that I performed.

(1) Mask the shoe and copy it to a new layer.

To mask the shoe, I used the Select > Color Range tool. I found it easiest to select the background, then invert the selection to keep only the shoe. After a little cleanup, this is the mask I was left with.

(2) Copy the blue stripe to a new layer.

I used the pen tool to isolate the blue stripe and copy it to a new layer so that I could maintain its integrity. I moved the stripe to the topmost layer so that it would always be visible.

(3) Adjust levels.

Working from the layer which contains the isolated shoe, I added a Levels Adjustment Layer and adjusted the settings as indicated below to lighten the shoe and bring out some of the details.

(4) Adjust leves a second time.

The shoe needs to be lightened up some more, but trying to do it all with just one pass of the levels tool resulted in losing too much detail. So I applied a second Levels Adjustment Layer as shown below.

(5) Clean up jpeg artifacting.

At this point, the jpeg artifacting resulting from this being such a low-quality image become very evident. I used the clone tool to remove some of the more obvious artifacts.

I next added a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer and reduced the saturation to -100% to remove all color from the ramining jpeg artifacts.

(6) Color the shoe white.

Finally, I added a new layer filled with white. The blending mode was set to "Lighten" with an opacity of about 50%. I also applied my shoe mask to the white layer so that the white paint would only affect the shoe and not the surrounding area.
