I recently had some time away with the family, i managed to take some photos of local birdlife, my question is this how can i improve on this type of shot?

well once again it is subjective to personal taste.

my thoughts are camera looks to be in auto mode with infinite focus on top image.

I would maybe take it more to spot metering and put all the focus on the main bird with wings up and adjust the focus point on to that bird and change aperature to the lowest you can get 2.8 or 4 if your using the kit lenses this will soften all the rest around the bird and really make it pop. unfortunately it seems it is at the top of a bank so where as you have got down low your still limited on composition.

that said there is nothing wrong with the shot it seems to be in focus all though I am looking only through the preview image in thread just maybe slightly over exposed once again that could be jpeg compression and not the actual raw image,

but for me I am a big fan of negative space where as this image has a lot going on

I would hate to give my views on composition because even that is down to personal taste

However I can reccommend a kelby subscription or if you dont wnat to spend $25 a month on it you can treat yourself once a wek or month and rent a course like this
http://kelbytraining.com/course/moose_shorebirds/

a new service where you pay $6.99 and you have access to any one of their courses for 3 days

dont want to spam the site as if I have an affiliation to it which I dont. but I love my kelby courses and a really good place to learn photography of all types.

Yeah top image was in auto/zoomed in some what they was a way off up on the cliff top, sun was up and behind them also, so i just did the auto route as this is all new to me at the minute, thanks.

Thanks for that info, i tend to keep taking images of trees since we moved here, the textures and colours alone are just amazing for me atleast.

I have looked at these a bit....First thought I have is to crop tight, and then over sharpen the textures Really depends on what you are looking for
