How to smooth a seam with Clone tool

Hi, I took some pictures of a family at a studio and for the most part was able to crop the images so the background fills the back. A few images I had the family sit too far forward so the background doesn't cover the entire picture, so I need to photoshop the background and extend it.

My question is what tools and method is best to smooth or blend this line?

What I did is copied a section of the wall, then paste as a separate layer, then I used the transform tool and stretched it to the right to cover up the pipes.

Now I have a fine linebefore.PNGAfter.PNG

Make sure there's a little bit of overlap between the two layers first. On the layer that's sitting above the original, add a layer mask and, with a soft brush, paint black in various places along the line. It's the same as using the eraser to rub out part of the image but it's a lot less destructive.

You have a few options....

1. use the clone tool set at airbrush with a light intensity (60%-my guesstimate) selecting the lighter areas as the source. Do this on a new layer so in case you don't lie the look you can discard it.

2. If the addition is on a single new layer, use Darkness/Contrast to match it to the other side. If on different layers, group into a set and apply the change on the set.

Hope it helps.
