How to select background

Hi

Sounds like I found a great place to find out about Photoshop . . .

I am using CS4, and many times when reading a tutorial they mention "Select Background" and go on to use, "Use curves to subdue background."

Is there an easy way to "Select Background"?

well gus i think they mean to highlight the background layer then use curves.
