how to save transparent photo

As Paul said, save as PNG or if you want to continue working on it at a later date save as a Photoshop PSD, this will preserve all your layers.
When saving to PNG use 'Save for Web and Devices' and choose PNG-24 from the drop down at the top, this will give you the best transparency, especially if its graduated.
JPEG does not support transparency.
GIF does support transparency but its either on or off, no gradients.
PNG-8 does do transparent gradients but its compromised.
PNG-24 does gradients without compromise....the best choice.
