Illustrator How to save in hairline format, and not shapes?

Hi,

Hoping someone will help me out here.

I am trying to create hairline outlines of images just like the attached image.

Tribal-Dragon.jpg
They are stencil designs, so just independent shapes. I need to take images
that are like the one linked to, and end up with hairline outlines of them (each shape).

I will admit that I am new to illustrator, obviously. I have managed to
get all the black areas converted to vector (from png) by using Live Trace.

Then close and reopen, and then the shapes are selectable, etc,.

And from there I have even managed to create hairlines around
the shapes. But I cant figure out how to save just those
hairlines. Whenever I save it, there are still the black shapes.

Does anyone know how I would go about saving it just in its hairline form?

Rocky

By the way, here is how I end up with the hairlines around the shapes, in case
there is any input in that area:

I open up the PNG file.
Use Live Trace to convert it to vector.
Save as SVG.
Reopen as SVG.
Use the selection tool to select the black shapes.
Use simplify to make nice curves.
Go to "Outline Stroke"
Increase line width to be sure the line is there:redface:
When I can see its there, take the width down to .001

... and then I am stumped!
