Referencing the loft, how would I combine the grid (frame) and mountain (background) to recreate this effect? (Images linked to larger sizes.)

The context for this tutorial request is that I’m decorating my virtual apartment in an MMO and trying to mask an ugly part of the architecture. I intend to set a wall at an angle and apply my final image so that it appears the frame is at that angle while the view is direct.

Disclaimer: I won’t use this background since it’s likely copyrighted. It’s for practice.

I’ve been browsing forums and tutorials since Wednesday and come up empty. I did try free-transforming the frame at the top and bottom as attempt at depth-of-perception, then trimmed the background to the frame, but my result was the exposure of the aforementioned ugly architecture. Spreading the top keeps the bottom the right size, but the frame runs off the end of the background and it’d look like the frame/glass was disappearing into the adjacent walls.

For this to look right, I think (correct me if I’m wrong), both the frame and background have to remain parallelograms.

Is there a way to rotate the 2D image so that I can see it from the side, then pull the frame layer forward à la protractor so that it’s at the angle I want?

What’s the best way to do this?

Thanks so much for any light you can shed on this!

P.S. Please cater to the lowest possible intelligence in your replies. I’ve only been using PS since Wednesday, and still refer to everything as “thingy”.

P.P.S. I tried linking the thumbnails to their full sizes for better visibility or use, but it won't let me. If you want the links, I have them uploaded to TinyPic and can forward them to you.

Your using the Thumbnail links probably, try using the direct link and add the [ i m g ] tags.. Have you tried playing with the perspective tool?? i need bigger pics to see what you are trying to do..

I need ten posts to be able to put links up. I'll message them to you, if that's okay.

I started reading about warp and perspective, but it's kind of over my head.

Thanks for reading my post!

You don't need ten post to embed an image.. go ahead and send me the links and ill see if i can get them posted for ya here in the thread..

Bump, fixed his photo's... Dex, if you goto your original post at the top and Goto Edit your post, you will see what link you need to use to embed images, look at the links i put in there for you and the little tags at the begin and end....

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it.

Edit: I see now what you mean by perspective tool, I think. It's Edit > Transform Path > Perspective, right?

If I use it, the frame goes off the background and I run into the glass/frame-disappearing-into-the-walls thing.

I'm about to watch a few movies i downloaded, if your dilemma is not solved tonight, i will get on it first thing in the morning, hows that sound??

Thank you! I'm so sorry to make you go to all that trouble. Just out of curiosity, this should be possible in Photoshop, right? I don't need some other graphic design program?

to be honest (with out sounding like a fan boy as some would say) you can dam near do anything in Photoshop when it comes to image manipulation...

lol. I'll rely on you, then, Sensei.

Just so you can see what I'm talking about, I took some screen shots of my attempts to get this thing working. Disclaimer: I am NOT responsible for the hideous default decor.

Plan A. Angled wall at 30 degrees, but the background image is angled, too.

Plan B. Flat wall effect, masks everything perfectly.

Plan C. Bay effect, done with warp tool, note the red trim visible underneath, scaling makes corners disappear into floor.

Plan No-Way. Done with perspective tool.

Alright, let's see here!! First thanks for posting some examples of what you are trying to do!! That helps a LOT!! Second, it can certainly be done but.. It's not going to be easy...

Are you trying to make all this happen while using the first photo's walls?? Or is that just an example?

Good morning!

The architecture is static. I can't change it, I can only try to mask it or work with it. Maybe the graphic designers here could send this company their resumes.

Default view. The other half of this room is even uglier and harder to work with.
Isa_Harmaajarvi-10-2-2010-8-0-12-262.jpg

Masked with wall and sign props. Wall at straight angle, sign at 15 degrees. Note the visible paneling on the sides.
Isa_Harmaajarvi-10-2-2010-8-26-8-544.jpg

Upward view, visible beams and ceiling between props.
Isa_Harmaajarvi-10-2-2010-8-27-46-499.jpg

Left side. Hard to see black frame line, but better shot of exposed side.
Isa_Harmaajarvi-10-2-2010-8-27-0-538.jpg

Right side. Exposed architecture.
Isa_Harmaajarvi-10-2-2010-8-26-52-452.jpg

There aren't any shapes I can use to fill in the sides, or I'd just try to wrap the image around and when I mess with it, I can get something to fill it, but the effect is really ugly.

For the reason, I was trying to go with a single image file so that I could apply it to a straight-angle wall.

I'm trying to create a single photo for use in a game. I'll attach the photo as a cached web image to an angled wall to mask that ugly part, so that it looks like I'm living in a loft rather than a mausoleum.

By my estimation, that means I need to create an angled frame to a straight-angle background, while keeping the whole thing a parallelogram.
