How to remove object without destroying picture?

I saw a before and after picture of a scene at the beach. The before featured 5 people left to right. The after picture now only had 3 people. 2 were removed but the sand and water looked untouched as if the persons were just removed.

Either the Clone Stamp tool was used or Content Fill, more than likely the Clone Stamp...

Typically, if you have CS5, content-aware delete will make the image object you want gone, disappear without much damage. But make sure you feather the selection around it and be prepared to clone stamp anything that looks a bit.. off.
