How to recreate this effect for a rusty semi-noob?

So I am trying to get the same text effect as found at the link below for a present for my girlfriend. It has been awhile since I used Photoshop and I am a little rusty so I am having some trouble figuring out how best to recreate this effect. I have already tried transforming a second text layer but it stretches from the mid out so the central letter has no change and the outer too much. I have also attempted to apply a stroke via the Layer Style panel but the applied stroke has rounded edges and I would prefer them to be squared like the text. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am trying to get the same maroon text with an interior of white and an exterior of white to over lay as they did in this image.
