How to place objects on beach sand

Hi,
Could someone direct me to a video on how to place objects from one picture onto another. Specifically, I want to place a case of beer (that I masked out of one picture), onto another (beach sand). I just cannot seem to make it look like it is resting on the sand. I have googled a lot of videos but to no avail. It doesn't have to be a case of beer, any object will do. I know how to cast a shadow (duplicate pic and free transform and gradient etc), but I just cannot do it like the (you all) pros do.

Thank you in advance,

Bob

Hey Bob, there are actually so many tutorials on this subject that it boggles the mind!

How about you just upload the reference images and screenshots of what you have so far and let us see if we can help you out.

Thank you for your quick reply.
I have been trying to upload the PSD via Manage Attachments. It says it uploaded 100 percent but the file does not appear in the top window (do I cannot drag it down). I will research how to correctly upload an attachment to provide to you.

Ok... I see what is happening... I tried using your Go Advance option which did not work. Clicking the icon you showed me does not allow me to upload a PSD file. So I will go and grab the several jpg images. Wait one please.

Thanks.

Now, how about those screenshots of how your version is going?

What's the story on the top image? Is this something you have created?

Yes. the top image is a flattened psd image and saved as a jpg. I have been trying to put the case of beer and pig roast on the sand and make them look like they are on the sand and not floating. As to the screen shots, I am not sure what you want...can you use the pictures i uploaded. I don't just want you to do this placements only... I need to know how to realistically place them on the sand. That's why I was looking for a video on how to do this.

PS I will go back and make a jpg showing the beer and roast resting on the sand.

The biggest part of making this look realistic will be making sure the color balance, sharpness, lighting, etc. are of the same or similar quality. Then it is a matter of how well you isolate and select the objects to be added and knowing how to blend them with the primary/original image.

What are all these lines?

Thanks, that's what I was needing to see!
Oh...those are the layer outlines from the PSD. Disregard them...I was manipulating the layers to extend them etc.... But the case of beer just does not look right

The first thing you need to do is to remove the white BG from the beer image.
Open the image in Ps and duplicate it (Cmd/Cntrl + J). Turn off the original.
Then use the Magic Eraser Tool. Click one time on the white BG.

Use the move tool to drag the beer image over to your Beach scene image.
Once there, use Free Transform to resize the image down to a believable size.
Use the Move Tool to position.

Add a layer mask to the Beer image and use the Brush Tool (with black) to work the bottom front and right side edges so it looks like the 20 pack is sitting in the sand.

I placed the Beer image in the shadow of the canopy on purpose so that I could make its shadow go across the top. But you don't have to do this.
So I will skip that part unless you want to try that as well.

On a new layer just below the Beer image layer, I use the Pen Tool to create a path that will become the shadow that will follow the contour of the sand.

Make it a selection (right click)

Fill with Black......

Cmd/Cntrl + D to deselect.

Give it a .09 Gaussian Blur.

Lower it's opacity to reasonably match the other shadow.
(we would have to make some color adjustments on the shadow later)

If you want some more detail........

Make a selection of the shadow and on a new layer above the shadow layer, use the Brush Tool set to black and add some shading.

Cmd/Cntrl + D to deselect.
Then lower the shading layers opacity.

Then I added a Curves adjustment layer which I clipped to the Beer image layer.
See the adjustment I made in the image. This helped tone down the colors to match the Beach scene.
