How to maek these torn edges ?

Hi i may not exactly point out what this effect is exactly called as am a novice in photoshop.I named it as Torn edges.I saw these images and i would like to know how they make them. I think they might have used any brushes? Torn edge brushes or any other methods .Can any one teach me with some tutorials.Thanks

You can draw a line and mask the edges , blur the edges....lots of ways to be found:

Make a selection, I just used a rectangle for an example.

Enter quick mask.

Filter gallery, brush strokes-spatter. Play with the settings till you get what you want. Click OK.

Exit quick mask, fill the selection.
