Trying to insert image into an ellipse shape layer; need to hide from view the overflowing parts around the circle or ellipse. How do I put in an image into a circular selection then hide the parts that are the outside the ellipse using Adobe Photoshop? Effectively I would like to put a normal photo into a circular object creating a round image.

I would try placing the photo on a layer above the circle/ellipse shape, then right click on the layer & select Create Clipping Mask.

You can move the photo around once this is done to get the content inside the shape you like best.

Masking will be the trick ...As SPWA said, or make a mask with your eclipse and cover things up
