In Photoshop 6 how would I go about taking a photo and having it grade out from black to white, from side to side?

Yea just grab the gradient tool and make yourself a new layer. Choose the colors of the gradient you want and drag the tool across your canvas.
If you don't see the gradient tool right away, click and hold on the Paint Bucket tool, they share a menu spot in the toolbar.
