How to get the Cindy Grundsten Fantasy effect?

I'm sure that I don't even need to introduce her to this forum, her work's phenomenal. I'm utterly amazed at her ability to turn photos of models into fantasy, I was wondering how would one go about at getting the same results as these? Here are examples of works that I'm talking about: Fantasy page 1 - Welcome to Cindys DigitalFantasyArt. All the pictures on this page comprise my bewilderment. Help would be appreciated.

Why don´t you ask her how she does it? She has a few tutorials on her homepage, I think a couple are in English at least, but they are not complete Fantasy tutorials, maybe you can use some of them and put them together? :)

How I make my manipulations can not provide any short answers. A manipulation / montage contains many different elements that you already know. Cut outs, shadows, light, blur, contrast, color and so on.

I have no secrets, and I probably dont work any different from what others do.

But what its important to keep in mind is to get all the details to blend into a whole. It may not look like cut and paste.

I'm trying to work a lot with that part. Shadows and light are important. And the color scheme is very important to me. I work a lot to ensure that the color tones are harmonious with each other.

An example. I see a picture that someone made a model and a beautiful backround. The background and details in the background has a yellow tint.
But the model itself has a blue tint.
On such a picture you can see immediately that something is wrong.

I have been asked many times for tutorials. And I've been thinking that I should do one. But you should also keep in mind that I work a little different with all my pictures. What works for one image might not work for another picture. So a tutorial only explains the work flow of the specific image.

And I also like to try new ways to work with my pictures.

Why I not have done any tutorial yet is only because of lack of time.
But you are welcome to ask if there is something special you have in mind, just ask. And I will try to explain.

I hope you understand my bad english

I'm honored to get a reply from you Ms. Grundsten. Your practicality to your imagination is humbling to put it mildly, guess it just goes to show that you're firmly grounded in your work and surreal world. I'll definitely take your advice on considering, every bit of detail to fit the bigger picture, to the bank and invest my all in it. I'd kill to watch you work, I'm sure that I could learn a whole lot from your work-flow alone. The texture I was referring to earlier is the blonde woman in a blue dress holding a lizard on a leash, it's on the first page of the fantasy category. Again thanks for taking time to answer my question.:yourock:

Sorry to say this, MightyZeus, but an introduction is already done at least twice and as expected, Cindy's been welcomed to this forum real properly.
Belial has even proposed to marry her ... :)

Yeah so back off mate, lol.
Ain't she wonderful at what she does.

I am sorry for my late replay on this...

Its over a year since I made that work. But I have opend the old Psd file so I can see how I did this one.

First the girl, I have removed some of the color with hue saturation. Then I have put a new layer, 50% grey with blend mode soft light on top of the girls layer. Then with white color and a soft brush and very very low opacity painted her skin lighter and lighter.

I also have lighten up her skin with curves. Inverted the layer and paint the skin with white foregrounds color.

To get her dress blue I used hue saturation and chosed a blue color. (the color can be changed anytime later on) Eaven that layer I inverted and then painted the dress (white foregrounds color)

Its hard to explain every detail because the language. When I work i try so many different things to get the effect I want.

To get nice details I use Dodge and Burn. Shadows and lights is necessary for the depth. But Dodge and burn is also perfect to lift up small detals.
I work a lots with Dodge and burn. Highlights lift the details up and shadows for the depth

Only when I shall do something very white I use a brush with white color on a 50 % grey layer (blend mode Soft light) instead of Dodge and burn.

Back to the image...
I work almost the same with the backround. This backround is made by more then one photo. So I have to set the right color on every detail.
I also remove some of the contrast because I dont want the backround too sharp.

When the image is almost finish its time to set the final color. For that I usually use Color Balance. And this layer on the top.

I start to experiment and I feel in the stomach when the color is right. On this one I also have a blue gradient on the top.

haha wow! I know this is not all. But this is a little how I have worked with this one.

I also want to say that I always use clipping mask when I work with the model. Its much more easy when it comes to change color, shadows and things like that.

The english is soooooo bad, I know. But I hope you still understand this.

If you have more questions I´l be glad to answer with my wonderful english! :)

Here is the image you are talking about. You can also see the original.

Sorry for budding in again ... but this is also known as Dodge and Burn in Softlight Mode (in this case Dodge) - if someone have come across that expression sometime and wondered what it is.
Works wonders when executed correctly but you have to be careful since the only way to restore a mistake is to paint it over with medium grey again ...

Yes you´re right. But i think its perfect that it is possible to restore a mistake by change the foreground to grey. With Dodge and burn you cant do nothing if something goes wrong. Then you must start all over again with a new grey layer.

Restoring a mistake:
Put the layer in Normal Blend Mode - sample the grey from the layer (Eye Dropper Tool / Pipetten ) to get the correct grey tone - switch layer back to Soft Light and paint over the mistake in 100% Brush Opacity - change colour and Brush Opacity back to working state and go at it again.
That's what I usually do ... :)

Cindy, you're amazing. Thanks for taking the time out and running your work-flow for us, you've definitely given me a new perspective on editing pictures and merging them to making sense together even though they're taking from different stock pictures. Ooh, not forgetting to thank Belial for granting us some time with his lady.

It was nothing. If I was better on English I could have explain much more, and also much better to you.

haha poor Belial now he'll probably start to cry when he read all the posts about this marriage haha, poor poor husband
