I'm looking to cut a template from an image.

Layering might be what i'm after? i'm really not sure.

So, I have a template of an iPhone 4 in psd format and an image, I would like the image to look as though it is on the template of the iphone, complete with camera hole left blank and the rest of the image to be removed (area of image larger than iphone template)

Hopefully i'm making a little bit of sense here, Any help greatly appreciated.

I find that the term template seems to mean different things to different people.

Try adding some images to help us understand what your needing.

Perfect, that's exactly what i was asking :) However, I'd like the image to be placed on the back.
How do I create a template like that?

Ideally, i'd like to use the image attached as the phone template to place pictures on, as it displays the clear sides of the case.
Would it work like above? As the picture is not a straight on view of the case.

Yes, it will work just fine, you may have to change the perspective of the image you add to the template, but it will work great!

Add a layer mask to the phone image and use your Pen Tool to trace the area you want to replace. When done tracing, (make sure mask is selected) fill the selection with black. Next, trace the camera hole and fill with white.

All that you need to do is choose whatever image you want and place it on a layer below the masked phone image.

Better instructions.......

Duplicate the original phone image. Leave the Original layer on.
On the duped layer, add a layer mask to the phone image and then use your Pen Tool to trace the area you want to replace.
When done tracing, (make sure mask is selected) right click, select "make selection", feather radius 0, anti aliased, new selection, and fill the selection with black. Don't worry that it does not seem to do anything, this is because the Original layer is still on.
Next, trace the camera hole and fill with white.
Turn off the Original layer. You should have something like this......

Next, just add whatever image or texture to a layer beneath the masked phone layer and it will show through! As I said, you may have to use the transform function on this layer to match the perspective of the phone.

Here' you can see I did transform the leather texture so it would match the perspective of the phone.

Thank you for all your help!!!

I can't seem to get the hang of it though.

I have duplicated the image, added layer mask, traced around with the pen tool, changed colour to black, yet when i turn off original layer i am just left with the black traced area

Make sure that you have the layer mask highlighted/selected.

Don't forget: When done tracing, (make sure mask is selected as shown below) right click (EDIT: right click on the main screen), select "make selection", feather radius 0, anti aliased, new selection, and fill the selection with black.

Notice the white brackets around the mask.

When you trace and fill the white area of the camera hole, also make sure the mask is selected.

I still can't seem to create the image deleted from case look.
When i deselect the original image im left with the black traced area with the white traced camera area.

I have made sure mask is selected when right clicking to "make selection"

Can't understand what i'm doing wrong :/

Just realised that the trace of the phone case and trace of the camera are seperate layers to the "mask" of the duplicate image, whereas you have created the traced areas all on the "mask"

Rob, I have terribly over estimated your current skill level. For this I apologize! I made some basic assumptions that I thought you would know that you apparently did not. This is my fault.

Here is a video I made for you on this matter. Please pause often to read as I go pretty fast in places.
