I have taken a portrait of a friend on a black back ground. They have asked me if I can put a fading spotlight effect just behind the head, can anyone give me so suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Mask out the person new layer, on another new layer use big brush soft/round place behind where person is and apply, place person layer over the new big bright spot blur spot layer.

Or post the picture and keep your fingers crossed for a freebie:mrgreen:

Hey, Paul, if you went to all that trouble, you should have gone all the way and simulated a theatrical follow spot with a gobo in the shape of some notes on a staff of music moving in back of the singer. :bustagut:
