I'm a photoshop rookie and I'm trying to create a horizontal drop shadow bar similar to what you see under the brand logos that appear on below:

Does anyone know how this is done -- OR -- know of an online tutorial I can follow to create this effect to get this effect? I have CS5.

Thanks!

I don't think that's what he was after. The effect in the image rsturim provided is more nuanced than just a drop shadow. You'll notice that it starts out thin, grows thick in the middle, and ends thin again. I'm also interested in how to achieve this.

Use a selection tool , I used the marquee tool to select an area.
Then use the gradient tool set foreground to transparent and drag the cursor from top to bottom, inside the selection.
Hold down the Shift Key to get a straight line.

this is what I would do select your area roughly as in picture, feather as needed in this case I feathered 25px dumped some blue paint to see a contrast from the original than when all is set put anoter image or what ever over it 3 minutes

of coarse erase that which is not needed. thats one way

Doesn't matter much, he's not been back to even see if we replied.

This effect is easy to achieve, just use a gradient.

Yes the gradient tool is the correct way of doing this effect. I found an online tutorial but as stated by Dezigns Unlimited, why bother posting. They ain't coming back.

And here I thought he was talking about lunch meat.

Spam is the use of electronic messaging systems (including most broadcast media, digital delivery systems) to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately. While the most widely recognized form of spam is email spam, the term is applied to similar abuses in other media.
Spamming remains economically viable because advertisers have no operating costs beyond the management of their mailing lists, and it is difficult to hold senders accountable for their mass mailings. Because the barrier to entry is so low, spammers are numerous, and the volume of unsolicited mail has become very high. The costs, such as lost productivity and fraud, are borne by the public and by ISP, which have been forced to add extra capacity to cope with the deluge. Spamming has been the subject of legislation in many jurisdictions.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_(electronic)#cite_note-0
