I'm trying to figure out how to make an image look like this. Basically a watercolor cartoon image that has been printed in a book. I've seen some halftone textures and it doesn't seem to give the same effect. Any help is GREATLY appreciated as I'm under a deadline and I am fairly new to photoshop

These textures look like fabric to me.
  • Find an image of fabric that looks like what you want. Convert it to Black & White.
  • Apply a Levels adjustment to either darken, lighten, increase contrast, decrease contrast, etc. Whatever looks good to you.
  • Here's a fabric texture I found. The left half shows the image as downloaded. The right half shows my Levels adjustment.

  • On a new layer above that, paint some colors and change the layer blend mode to Multiply. See below.
  • You can experiment with different layer blend modes. Color Burn has a slightly different effect that you may prefer.
  • Depending on how dark your underlying fabric layer is, you may want to brighten your color layers to make them more vibrant. Use a Levels adjustment for that.

There are a few tutorials out there with other techniques. Search YouTube for Photoshop Fabric Textures.

Although the original picture is a actually a scan/photo from a book, the fabric texture does look very similar. Thanks for the idea.
