How to achieve this look?

Hello!

I've been trying so hard to achieve the look of this picture. I am not sure how to get the outline like if it's hand drawn and also the shadow that goes on the outline. Not sure what tools I should use to get the outline and shadow look that way. I already tried several brushes but I haven't found anything like this one.

Any help will be MUCH appreciated!

It looks to me like the whole outfit, border included, is a drawing. In fact I think it is a card. The shadow is either real, part of the photograph or if it is an effect, it is a layer fx or painted with a brush on a layer below the outfit and above the background.

That's definitely a photograph. The shadow could be recreated using layer style effects (Google "drop shadow layer style"). The drawn look of the outline could be achieved using one of the "artistic" or "brush stroke" effects under the "filter" menu, but you'd still need to draw the initial outline.

Thank you so much ibclare and J2D2! This is a handmade card, I've been wanting to do the same effect (if I knew how) and use it in some designs but I just can't get it right! *sigh*:banghead:... I even tried on AI but I believe the original design was made in Photoshop.

I'll follow your advice and see if I can get the outline and shadow look like the original, thanks again guys!

Here is another sample of the same look...please note the hand drawn outline and the shadow that is right next to it...any other ideas?

The 'hand drawn' lines are there first then the 'cut out' is made after following the lines leaving about a 10mm gap.
You could re draw the body shape print it off then cut out the shape of baby romper i suppose?

idk i think its simple brush with hard ness on max and applying drp shadow on it to make it look 3D gonna try it see if im right!

That is certainly a possible solution. I used a layer effect but it doesn't work so well under the figure itself. Easy enough to do with a layer underneath. I would use a soft, low opacity brush and build it up. You want a more solid shadow close to the light, fading out along the farther edges.

To get that lifted up shadow look, just play with the angle and opacity of teh shadow and warp the design slightly to lift the edge if necessary.
