How to achieve this cubist-esque background?

Hello,
I'm trying to accomplish an effect similar to the background of this image (disregard the cowboy and the radio).

From what I can tell, it looks like some Soft Light & Overlay blend modes and a blur has been applied to the outside of the image. My question is...how do I make those shapes? Were these Gradients? I don't understand what the light and dark are...

he has, as I can see, used one piece to the background, then used different lightnings and blendingmodes on parts of that picture. How to get that effect is to use whatever adjustment you want with layer masks.
