how do I select a shape?

I drew a rectangle shape in a layer. I deselected it. Now when I am trying to select it again I am neither able to select or edit it. What am I doing wrong?
 
Press and hold CTRL and click on the rectangle thumbnail in the layers panel.
To transform make the layer active and press CTRL + T.
