Please check out John's portfolio on Flickr. (this is by no means my portfolio, but rather someone that I do not know. Just wanting some advice on how to achieve this kind of color scheme in my photos)

Examples

Can anyone teach me how to achieve this kind of coloring with photoshop?
Or perhaps the name of the technique?

Thanks!!

there are lot of pictures. But no color clarification in your question. will you please define with a single image?

Maybe make a new layer and set as SCREEN, and make a couple of adjustments to the light, hope that helps?

Sorry about that.
I will try to make it a bit more clear.

Lets take for example this picture.

To me, the colors in the picture seem to be washed out a little bit and faded out a little bit. It also seems like the exposure is set a little bit higher.

I am trying to achieve this look in my post processing of my pictures as well. Sort of, I guess you can call it, vintage like?

Yeah like i said mate, you just play around with the colours after you made the screen layer.

as above my connection froze first time:banghead:

Thanks for the tip!
I scrolled down so fast I didn't catch your post! sorry!!

I was wondering what you meant by adjustments to the light?

Via contrast and you could also try using the curves feature maybe?

Thanks for all your input.
Ive played around with it but still cant get enough teal and ''light-ness'' to my pictures.
But I will continue to play it with it.

ok here is what I achieved just playing around

I think this is as close as you will get bearing in mind the original photographer would have done his pic with a 50mm portrait lense hence soft background focus which you can adjust in photoshop if desired the steps I took
image>adjustment > levels slide the middle slider to the left about halfway between the middle and the left
create new curves adjustment level and select green channel and adjust as in the image below then select red and do the same with the red image but dont touch the blue these will all vary on picture of course

i hope that is what your after it is not perfect but as close as I could get it in 20 mins of playing around

I have actually spent quite a lot of time on this and still cant get it right but not had an improvement since last post I made

Have you opened it in Bridge to see if there's somethings you could do there? No suggestions right off. Did u check out the vid link from Sir Maximus?
I have never used Bridge before. What would I be looking at in there? haha

Thanks for all your inputs.
I tried Belial's and Sir Maximus's tips on my last shoot and these are the results.
I like it, however still not exactly what I am looking for. (the teal and brightness without much of color loss)..

i don't see teal in those photos. i see natural (cooler) light coming in through the windows and teal curtains, but the skin and walls look more pinkish yellow to me. later in the photo stream the outdoor shots also look pinkish yellow and not teal.

first shot is the original, second is yellow/red, third is teal. used 4 curves adj. layers.
first curves layer - tonal adjustments to increase brightness, set to blending mode screen @ 36% opacity
second curves layer - adjusted the individual colors in curves, set to blending mode luminosity @ 75% opacity
third curves layer - adjusted individual colors in curves to get the yellow/pink or teal colors, set to blending mode color - opacity adjusted to taste (60ish% on the teal, 40ish % on the yellow/pink cause i went a little heavy handed)
fourth curves layer - duplicate of 3rd layer set to blending mode screen and opacity lowered to taste.

if this is what you're looking for i'll post some screenshots of the curves dialogue panel so you can see what the curves looked like.

That is brilliant siodre.
That is exactly what I'm looking for!

Please do post the screen shots when you have the time ^-^
THanks!

I was thinking you could also experiment with a layer's adjustment of levels. Using the output slider and varying it's distance to the right. Just a thought.

As for Bridge, it's pretty amazing, powerful program. It works in tandem with Photoshop. You open pictures in Bridge itself (RAW format from camera or any jpeg - maybe other but definitely not PSDs). Then you can play with exposure, temperature, contrast. There's the ability to see washed out whites and over-expo'd blacks, and tools to fix those. There's sharpness adjustment and noise reduction, you can add or remove graininess. There's even a slider so you can see the background of the sharpening process. On and on.

I imagine there are some good tutorials, probably some by our own Gurus. If you need help, just ask. I have a bit of experience in it and there are bound to be photogs with even better understanding. As for myself, I needed to upgrade my MS Office skills as well as some other Adobe programs, so I subscribe to lynda.com. The tutorial on Bridge is really clear and easy to follow. So are the others I've viewed.

Either open Bridge directly or go to the file menu in Photoshop and choose "open in Bridge." When you get to Bridge, choose the img and click the icon of a diaphragm on the tool bar. But I really do suggest you get some training. Let me know if there's anything I can do. Ultimately, experiment and play is the best teacher. Cheers, IB
