How do I get the same effect as the tumblr home page screen?

I'm trying to get this gradient effect just like it is on the tumblr site. Where the center box fades into the background.

I made a box in the center and applied a transparent gradient, it didnt seem to work, Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Any ideas?

I don't know, i don't get any problem.

First of all very unacurate background, they left color banding and it isn't so hard to get rid of it - and they talking about creating themes - lame

About how it done.
1. it is radial solid gradient form center with center color and side color not transparent one. Of course, transparent gradient can do same with trick but why?
2. it is streched. Than can be seen by looking at banding - they not circles but elliptic. So make let say 500px x 500px document.
3. Use radial gradient.
4. Now go to Image Size uncheck Contrain Proportions and make it 1000px wide.
Done without much color banding.

And seems that they have resize it up let say 200%. Bandind, banding, banding.
