How do I blend two parts of an image for a smooth transition?

Hello:

I created a background to use on my site and I have a question regarding the layers. The background can be seen here for reference: imgur: The Simple Image Sharer

Basically, I have this metal texture outside of the page area of the background. Below that is this sandy texture that will be the overall background of the site. If I use this image as is, I'll have a perfectly straight line between the background and the rest of the site so I need to fade in that metal part to the sandy background below it so that everything blends. How do I go about doing this?

Think what you are asking is done by selecting the white area then select inverse>feather the amount you want to fade then select inverse again >delete the area in question..either using eraser or delete button.

The white area is actually fine the way it is. I'm trying to fade out the metal area to the layer that's underneath it so on the very left edge of the img and the very right edge, it will blend into the rest of the page.
 
I do a lot of that type of blending on my images and there many different ways to do it...simplest I have found is to use one of those brushes that are spattered looking and then change the opacity maybe 60% (maybe less)..do a little erasing and then come back and do a little stamping at a 60% opacity till it looks like what you want...got to play with it a little but kind of fun..I just go back and forth between the layers til it works...
 
If you are familiar with how to make an image tilable, the other thing you can do is convert the image you are going to use for a background image to fade from the metal texture on the top to your page background color or transparent at the bottom. Then have the image repeat on the Y axis when you design the web page. If you don't know how to make it tilable you could also just make it extremely wide.
