Hello, I try to make this work I try to make a book effect in CS6 I found a tutorial but I cannot post the link here. I make the path , made a selection but as soon as I have to make the first shadows I do I think something not right. In the layer palette I see only one layer named background and no layer of the path. On the path I see one path called temporary layer. So I wonder where I did go wrong. I apolize that I typed everything at this way but the enter key makes no repons here.

Hi Roelof and welcome!

This would be much easier if we could see the tutorial you mentioned.

Type the link (url) in this manner and you can post it: photoshopgurus dot com

You can also add images by using this icon:

Here's the LINK

Let me take a look at it right quick to see if I can understand where your having trouble.

What step in the tutorial are you having trouble on?

Hey roelof, I did the tutorial word for word and I cold not get Step 4 to work! I think the original author left out some key steps. So I changed them................

STEP ONE:
We will start with a new blank, white canvas. CREATE A NEW LAYER. Then, with the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) make a selection for a page in the book, like so:

STEP THREE:
Go to the PATHS palette (Window > Paths) and right-click the Work Path, choose Make Selection. We do not want to Feather Radius (0), MAKE SURE ANTI-ALIAS IS CHECKED, click Ok. We should now have a selection of our Path:

STEP FOUR:
GO BACK TO YOUR LAYERS PANEL. FILL THIS SELECTION WITH WHITE. PRESS COMMAND/CONTROL + D TO DESELECT. Now open up the Layer Style by double-clicking the layer. Choose Drop Shadow, and reduce the Opacity to 45%, Distance to 3px, and Size to 5px.

This should work for you!

Hey roelof,

You should have two layers by this point. The original white background layer and a new layer you are creating the book page on.

In order to bring up a layer style, double click in the body of the layer or right click and choose "blending options" then drop shadow.
You can also go the bottom of the layers panel and mouse click the FX icon and select "drop shadow".

Actually, I would make my Background a little darker color for visibility.

Can my fault be that Im using use temporarly path ?

Yes, you will have to convert the path back into a selection, fill with a color before you will see the layer style.

Thanks, This works now. But at step 8 I have to press crtl and click with the mouse to select the pages. But on my system nothing happens.

Hey roelof,

As before, the original author left out important instructions!

In step 8, you should have two page layers, a left page layer and a right page layer. In this step your selecting one page and then adding the other page selection to it.

Your layers panel should be similar to this one. Place your cursor where the black arrow is pointing (this is called the thumbnail), then press Control + Click to make a selection.

Your page in the canvas should look like this.....

Then place your cursor where the red arrow is pointing, and press Shift + Control + Click to add this layers new selection to your previous selection.

Your pages in the canvas should now look like this........

oke, I see a problem. I still have several layers with all the copies. How do i make one layer a page of this ?

roelf, you should have several layers/pages of both right and left sides! This is not a problem!

STEP FIVE:
Right-click the layer and Duplicate it. Adjust the Layer Style of this new layer: make the Drop Shadow Distance and Size to 1px. Now choose the Move Tool (V), and hit the left arrow twice, the up arrow once. Repeat this process for the number of pages you want to create. In this example, we have created three pages:

What I showed you above was the instruction from step 8 only! I did not include the extra pages to save time. (I'm very sorry, I thought you understood this!)

STEP EIGHT:
(Mac: Command + Click / PC: Control + Click) the layer for the top page on the left, and then (Mac: Shift + Command + Click / PC: Shift + Control + Click) the layer for the top page on the right, so that we have a selection that looks like this:

You still have to follow the instructions of the tutorial.

Step 5. Tells you how to create the extra pages.
Step 6. Tells you how to create the left side of the book by duplicating and flipping the right side.
Step 7. Tells you how alter the layer styles of the left side to match the right.
Step 8. Tells you how to choose the TOP pages/layers only of the right and left side to make a selection.

Thanks. hopefully last question. I have must now make the layer with the shadow for the center of the book. How can I make the best a shadow which is almost black in the middle and almost white in the end.

Roelof,

One way would be......using the same procedure as explained in step 10, repeat this step a few times but make your brush smaller and smaller as you go. Hold down the shift key while doing this!
