How can I get a smooth background?

I used to pay a photographer $200 an hour to get this kind of pictures for us like the picture of the crab you see here.
It was getting too expensive to pay him so I decided to try to do it myself and of course it turned out much harder than it looks. I have the same exact backdrop he has and soft boxes. I still need to get a good camera.

I took the picture of the deer. Why is my background not as smooth? Is it because of my camera? or do you think our photographer used some tool on Photoshop? Any help is appreciated!

Move the subject farther from the backdrop and use a large aperture setting to decrease the depth of field so the background will be out of focus

I can see that background getting smoothed out by lens blur filter

I'm sure you're right but from his post it sounds like this is something he will be doing in the future, so unless he's content to Photoshop every single picture...well you get my drift.

Oh nice,
the background looks much nicer. IDad, Did you use anything else besides the lens blur filter?
Hawkeye, Im going to try different apertures and what I get. Im new to taking photographs

both photography and photoshop suggestions are welcome!

thanks I really appreciate the help!!!!

I use the magic wand and selected the background with a tolerance of about15% clicked a few times but it was very simple then I used the lens blur filter Sorry I didn't save the settings I also may have added a warming filter to bring the color up I know I thought about it but I don't remember if I did.... Brainfart I guess lol
