How can I fix color on scans of photos developed from damaged film?

Does anyone have any good ideas on how to fix the color on this photo. I have several more like it. They are scanned from photos that were developed from damaged film. On the photos where the entire image is yellowed I have no problem correcting the color, but I'm not quite sure how to make a selection on photos like these and then match the color to the other half.

I am using cs5.

Thanks!

Wow! what a tip.
Hawkeye please explain that a little more. I got the adjustment layer sitting there but how do you apply the gradient to it?

When you go to curves, that will show a white mask next to the curves icon, pick gradient tool, set to black and white and draw your gradient as shown above...the curves adjustment will work on the part you have uncovered with your mask.

Thanks Mike Uh...duhhhh I got it now. I need to stop working at night..not good for me at my age !

By the way, for images with a tricky transition like that one, you can also use transform (ctrl+t) on the mask gradient to get it right.

Thanks hawkeye I'll try that.

Thanks Hawkeye!

The gradient was a bit difficult to line up perfectly, but the tip about transform was very helpful!
