How Can I Create a Simple Vignette using Photoshop 7?

Add a new layer above the image layer.
Fill the new layer with black.
Lower the new layers opacity by 50% or more.
Add a layer mask to the new layer.
Use the Gradient Tool. Set to Foreground to Transparent. Set to Radial Gradient. Set foreground color to black.
With the layer mask selected, create a gradient starting from the center of the image. You can make several passes if needed.
Adjust transparency of the new layer if needed to suit your taste.
